In particular, I think a lot of guitar players are tempted to be what they call "tool collectors", always learning new techniques and licks but never putting it together into real music-making. Stepping away from trying to be a walking encyclopedia of guitar towards developing a coherent musical style is a tough decision for many.
It's possible to become a professional player as a "tool collector" but it's important to decide that's what you want, not just to fall into it.
